What you need to know before you switch to a booster seat!

We all want our children to be safe when traveling in the car.  And rightly so – motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of death and injury in young children.   But let’s face it, navigating the world of car seat safety is not easy.  There are many stages of seats, there are several brands of car seats and there are numerous laws.  In addition, there are injury prevention experts who suggest doing more to provide maximum protection for your child.  It can be downright confusing.

You probably have a lot of questions; don’t worry – you’re not alone.  Parents tend to have the most questions when children are transitioning from one stage to another.  Let’s talk about the transition from Stage Two (forward-facing) to Stage Three (booster seat). Continue reading

Helping children deal with grief

Grief. That word alone sounds heavy. But what is grief? To put it in simple terms, it’s the oh so many different feelings you can experience when someone close to you dies – those gut-wrenching, tears flowing, mind-numbing, overwhelming feelings.

Grief is bigger than words and cannot often be adequately described. It cannot be generalized because no two journeys will be the same. Coping with death does not follow a simple pattern or set of rules. It is such a difficult and personal time.

Grief becomes even more complicated if you’re supporting your child as they cope with the same loss. Your family’s grief may seem out of sync – adults and children process and manage grief at different times. Grief in children can be hard for parents to understand as children can be sad and crying one moment then be happy and laughing the next. Continue reading

A Bed and Bath Connection

With three children under the age of five, our pre-bed routine is busy to say the least.  It always seems like a mad and noisy dash to get everyone washed, dressed and cuddled. To me it feels like I’m living the same circus routine every night!

So that night when I stubbed my toe and went down (and I really stubbed my toe), I fully expectedBlog1 no one to notice. Much to my surprise, that was not the case! Within seconds my three little ones were at my side comforting me with, “it’s OK mommy!”  and “don’t be hurt mommy!” and together they started to sing me a song. Social Media Reality Check

Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and Pinterest are just a few of the more popular social media communities that allow us to connect, share and create.  With follower counts, like buttons, pins and online threads, it is hard not to be drawn in by these dynamic virtual worlds.

As I watch Essena O’Neill on YouTube (a self-made Instagram sensation) reveal her struggles with self-acceptance and the reality behind her perfect Instagram pictures,  I wonder how many people questioned their own beauty, ability and self-worth while scrolling through the countless selfies of this seemingly flawless girl. Remembering with our children

Child holding poppyRemembrance Day is here and like many Canadians, I proudly wear a poppy. This year my daughter asked, “What’s that flower for  mommy?”

How do we tell our children about the enormity of Remembrance Day? How do I tell a four-year old that my two grandfathers fought in World War II and both returned with horrific memories of young people lost forever? Of the sacrifices that were made during wartime at home by the remaining women and men, and the sacrifices that continue to this day? Continue reading
