Immunize and Report it!

Did you know you need to report your child’s immunizations to the Health Department?

I didn’t (and I’m a nurse – hopefully that makes you feel a little better)! Before I started working at the Health Department I just followed the recommended immunization schedule, went to the doctors, got the vaccines and that was that.  I didn’t realize I was supposed to report these vaccines to the Health Department.

If you were like me, no need to worry.  You can report your records now, and reporting just got a whole lot easier by being able to report online. Yeah!! (I’m one of those that love everything online.) Continue reading

3 things to do when your child is whining

The time after childcare and before dinner is ‘whine-central’ at my house. Just last night my little ‘Pumpkin’ jumped from one demand to another, and when I wouldn’t or couldn’t comply (it makes no difference to kids, does it?), she brought out the big gun: whining. Her voice is not just high-pitched, but she will test out her entire vocal range and is almost impossible to understand. We’ve learned quickly that there is the ticking time bomb that goes along with her whining: a tantrum can that can explode in just 2.5 minutes! Continue reading

Breastfeeding, birth control and your wonderful body

Your busy day is finally over, the night is young and your little ‘bundle of bliss’ is asleep at last.  After mulling over how to  spend your prized down time, you decide reading in bed is the ticket.  Now you’re comfy between the sheets, one chapter into your book when it happens: that look from your partner (you know the one) – the wink with that little smile. Your book just got sidelined!

Kids making school lunches! “Gasp” Does it really happen? Learn 5 Tips to get them started.

Do kids actually make their own lunches? I’ve heard of this, but does it really happen?

I was chatting with my friend Cheryl who was adamant that her kids make their own lunches because this is what she did when she was young. I chuckled (somewhat embarrassed) as I admitted that I still make my kids lunches BECAUSE I had to make my own. I actually have no memory of my parents making my lunches, maybe being the 4th child might have had something to do with it! Continue reading

Being a new parent can feel overwhelming

Overwhelmed mother with baby

There is nothing quite as life-changing as becoming a parent. As a childless person you may have imagined what it would be like to become a parent. Maybe you pictured yourself rocking a sweet, sleeping baby; having fun picking out cute clothes; kicking a ball around with a three-year-old; laughing together.

“They” say nothing truly prepares you for parenthood. A friend likened it to when two people first move in together. You suddenly need to compromise and consider the other person’s needs. You find there are things you love about living with your partner, and yet there are other things that you don’t love. There can be disagreements and many moments that are not quite the picture of domestic bliss you had imagined. You might even find yourself at times grieving for the life you once had. This does not mean that you don’t love your partner, but things are now very different for you. Continue reading
