2013/2014 Flu Shot Review: Two Thumbs Up

This month Halton Region launched the 2013/2014 influenza vaccine. I got to be one of the first to experience the new 2013 flu shot – one of the perks of being a nurse who may come into contact with vulnerable clients. Here is my quirky “review” 😉

Sight: Looks pretty much like any other vaccine in a syringe. Clear. Boring.

Smell: Again, boring. Unless you count the alcohol swab smell. That’s a bit strong at first sniff but fades away fast. Not entirely unpleasant. Continue reading

7 Effective Homework Habits

As I title this blog, I’m throwing a little reference to the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People in there… Uhmmm… Could effective homework habits be the beginning of developing a highly effective student? Fingers crossed… I’m hopeful.

homeworkHowever, for some reason my kids homework somehow stress me out. Is it that they have too much homework? Is it that my child procrastinates so much that homework seems like it takes forever? Is it that our lifestyle does not leave much time for homework? Or is it simply that I cannot help my 10 year old daughter with her math… because I have no idea how to do “new division”. Really? (That’s frustration you hear!) Continue reading

Kids and Money: Not So Funny!

Wow!  Teaching our children to manage money is not very easy, is it?  My girls are 11 and 13 and have definitely awoken to the extras that a few dollars in their pockets can buy.  While it is true that since they were able to talk, they have asked for things that their folks didn’t think were needed. Now, at this age, they talk to their friends, envy their things, and have personal interests that cost quite a bit (imagine my surprise when my daughter wanted to buy a lego modular building for $225.00!). They can also check out websites for things they fancy. One of my girls desires a membership at the gym to play games, learn karate, or get better at racquet sports.  And, big surprise, they all cost money and not just a bit.  It adds up quickly! Family First: Simple acts make a big difference…

A happy family spending time together. As we wrap up National Family Week, it makes me stop to appreciate my wonderful and sometimes crazy family life. Even though I work with parenting every day and have many accreditations, I am far from being the perfect mother or knowing everything. No one is perfect in real life; striving for this can actually set you up for big disappointments.

Parents are not perfect. Kids are not perfect. Don’t despairContinue reading

“Thanksgiving’s upon us – So, what are you thankful for?”

What am I thankful for this Thanksgiving?  That my kids are breathing.  That my unique, imperfect, delightful and sometimes challenging children are on this planet.  That my kids are the rosy-cheeked, giggly little people they are who argue with each other, defy me now and then, make a lot of noise and messes and sometimes do things so completely out of character that they make me wonder whose kids they are.  I am just simply thankful they are my kids.  That’s what honestly comes to mind this year when I hear that question.
