Water tubing: New heights for my son; New nerves for his mom

Our summer vacation over the past few years has been to rent the same quaint little white housekeeping cottage. It sits right on the edge of Pine Lake in Northern Ontario. Actually there are 5 cottages that line the shore, all filled with old and new friends. Its a blast!  One of the families brings their sunshine yellow speed boat and drops it in the lake for a fun-filled week of water skiing, knee boarding and tubing. “Awesome!” I thought to myself the first year they brought it up. My kids are going to have wonderful experiences & memories of water sports, something I never experienced growing up. Or so I thought… Continue reading

Hey, that’s WATER! You can’t waste that stuff!!

Water Conservation

“Ummm…whaT (emphasis on the “T”) do you think you’re doing?” My pint-sized son stands before me, hands on hips with full-on attitude (or “chude” as we call it in our house), furrowed brow and look of utter indignation. I follow his annoyed gaze to the side of our pool where the hose (that had been filling the pool moments earlier) was resting on the lawn, soaking the grass beneath it, having accidentally fallen to the ground. “Don’t you people know about water?? You can’t waste it like thaT (a second hard “T” for good measure) sheeeeeeesh!!” Continue reading

Keeping Your TEEN Busy This Summer

Ahhh summer… the days are starting to get longer and the warmth of the sun is putting an extra spring in your step. The routine of school days and bedtimes will soon be a distant memory.

It’s summer… where did bedtime go?

Just like that the longest days of the year are here. Oh sun, how I missed you this winter!

At the same time though, I also am noticing my toddler’s bed time is creeping later and later. I’m not sure whether it’s because of me – maybe my own enjoyment of the summer evenings and desire to spend more time with my little girl after work – or if she is less interested in an early bedtime because the days are so long? Maybe it’s a mix of both?

I am really enjoying the extra hour of sleep in the mornings, so this change is totally working for us. But I can’t be the only parent seeing this change in the kids’ bedtime. What does it mean for the older kids? Continue reading

Camping with kids: It reconnected us as a family…

When I was a child, the summers seemed endless. Do you remember that? Just day after day with no schedule but the “It’s time for dinner” from the front porch. Ahhh!

Summers always started the same way for me. For as long as I can remember, every July long weekend our 1977 “pop up” tent trailer would get packed with all our necessities… plastic plates, pots & pans, sleeping bags, clothes and a ton of “yummy” food. We would then hop into the sky blue Chrysler Plymouth and we were off to Manitoulin Island for our annual camping trip.
