Every day, there is a child enrolling in a new licensed child care program so that their parents can work, return to work, or go to school.

My child has what? (fifth disease)

One day you may go to pick up your child from their school or daycare and see a sign that says, “A case of fifth disease was identified in this class.  Please see your teacher for further questions.”  Most likely this gets your protective parent mind racing.  What does this mean?  Is my child safe?  Are they okay? Do reptiles and young kids mix?

I was recently told about a two-month old baby who had been infected twice with Salmonellosis–more commonly known as Salmonellaand was admitted to the hospital on both occasions. Salmonella is often associated with certain foods such as uncooked or raw meat.  Since this baby was only two-months old, her diet would not have included the foods that usually lead to Salmonella poisoning. So doctors looked into other possible causes and found out the parents owned a pet snake that they would often put in the crib with the infant. Continue reading
