Spring is in the air. The weather is warming, the sun is shining and the crisp breeze gently presses against my face as I take a long, deep breath and feel inspired. Inspired to get outside with the family. But my kids say “we’ve already done that!” or “that’s boring!”. As for me, I’m looking for low budget activities that will keep the family active and entertained. It has become so expensive now that we often have to pay adult prices for our teens.
So my goal was to find something local that doesn’t break the bank and that we can do outside! I’m not originally from Halton, and I was amazed by how many great activities I discovered! Here are my top staycation ideas!
Go for a walk
Yup. Its that simple. We did it a few times over the long weekend and it is a great way to chat with the kids. Stay around your neighbourhood or check out some of the local walking and hiking trails.
- Hiking (Conservation Halton)
- Cycling and Walking (Halton Region)
- Waterfront trails
Explore your surroundings
Get to know Halton! Stroll around your downtown area, go fishing, camping or outdoor rock climbing.
Visit farms and markets
You might think that farms and farmers’ markets are only for young children but that’s not the case. My kids love going to the farmers’ market, especially when they get some yummy home baked goods. We have lots of local farms, markets and farmers’ markets in Halton, so check them out.
Discover art and culture
As the summer approaches, don’t forget about our great art and culture.
Be a volunteer
Don’t forget you can also give back to your community in many ways. Volunteer as a family!
Let me know if you’ve tried any of these activities and share your favourites! We’d love to hear from you.
