Diners, Drive-Ins and Dinewise

Food poisoning is nasty, makes you feel beyond terrible, and more than 4 million Canadians get it every year (Health Canada, 2015).  My worst encounter with this gastric invader followed a scrumptious chicken dish at a beautiful restaurant in Florida. To make things worse, I’d insisted my hubby finish my meal since it tasted so good – a score still unsettled. Kids, fighting and back to school routines.

“Will you stop fighting!” I tell my kids, raising my voice a little too loudly. Yes, my kids are at it again and it can be so frustrating and trivial to me! And it seems to be getting worse as we go deeper into the summer months.

Recently it hit me (no pun intended) that the fighting always seems to creep up after a period when the kids stay up too late, eat at odd times (with questionable food choices), and of course, spend ‘too much’ time around each other. The long, lazy summer days mixed with chores, work, play, friends and a bit of boredom are wearing thin on everyone. Continue reading

Top 3 “Big Kid Skills” to learn before Kindergarten

Pumpkin starts Kindergarten in September. <gulp>

The hardest part about the kindergarten experience might not be what you would expect. For many children, it is the independence. Learning how to do all those little things moms, dads, grandmas and child care providers do for kids without giving it a second thought. Things like:

  •  Opening a wrapper
  •  Zippering up a jacket
  •  Putting on shoes
  •  Wiping after going to the washroom
  •  Washing hands
