Adoption: Public Curiosity or A Family’s Private Story?

Our family became one through the long journey of adoption. While we had expected an assault on our privacy as the adoption agency did their work to prepare us, e.g. home studies, financial and police, checks, we were less prepared for the questions about adoption that came our way, and to our children. Innocent things said to us that suddenly now meant something different.

So, picture this – my preschoolers and I enjoying a lovely outing at our neighbourhood park and packing up after a couple of hours of play. As we collected our sand toys to head home, a curious parent approached our happy little crew. She was a stranger to my two beautiful Chinese girls and to me, however, it didn’t stop her from asking one of those dreaded stranger questions, “Are they yours?” “They sure are!” I proudly replied continuing to gather our things. Then, the even more dreaded question, “Are they really sisters?” My girls stopped what they were doing, clearly listening in. Continue reading

“My toddler refuses to eat!”

The amount of food Pumpkin is able to consume in one sitting is so shocking at times that my husband and I will do a play-by-play analysis: “First she ate a whole banana! Then she reached for the cheese! I lost count with how many slices she had! Then, she actually asked for more chicken, TWICE!” We’ll swear she ate more than the two of us combined.

The next day, she might take one bite of dinner and throw her usually beloved pasta on the floor.

We get lots of calls on our HaltonParents phone line from parents feeling exasperated by their toddler’s food refusal. Continue reading

Many of us are juggling being mothers, partners, daughters, aunts, grandmothers, sisters and friends – and doing it darn well I might add! In light of this most auspicious occasion, I wrote a poem, detailing our awesomeness, through my lens. Enjoy!

Keeping toes and faces clean,
Giving floors that glossy sheen,
“You did what with a jelly bean?
What’s this in the grocery cart?” Continue reading

Pregnancy and Parenting after Infertility

This post is the second in our Year of the Family 2014 series, a celebration of families.

The pain and loneliness of infertility

It took 3 years, 2 pregnancy losses and 4 intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycles for my husband and me to conceive our daughter.

During those three years I ever so slowly distanced myself from friends and family. Normally I am a very open person, but hearing pregnancy announcements along with painful words meant to comfort; “maybe it’s stress” and “everything happens for a reason” made me withdraw in self-preservation. I had a hard time relating to anyone. If I could just get pregnant and make it past the first trimester, I figured, I would go back to normal and not feel so alone. Continue reading
